News and updates

This page shows the latest updates on the extension proposals. We will continue to post updates on this page as we continue through the planning process and, if approved, during construction.

20 February 2020

On Monday 2 March we will begin some maintenance work on the exterior of the hotel building. The project will involve replacing the infill to the windows by removing the current aluminium panels, filling the cavity with new insulation and applying a new aluminium panel on top.

This work will be carried out between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday for approximately three weeks.

The work does not relate to the fire safety of the hotel building. The hotel building has always been safe to operate and continues to be, irrespective of this project. Following the Grenfell Tower fire, Whitbread immediately and voluntarily took the decision to have its hotels assessed by independent fire safety experts and was assured that they are all entirely and unequivocally safe to operate.

The hotel will continue to be in use during this project. We have advised our contractors that residents live in close proximity to the hotel, and noise needs to be kept to a minimum.

10 February 2020

We are carrying out maintenance work to the bridge link to the main entrance of the hotel off Duke’s Road. The work began on 10 February and will take approximately ten days to complete.

While the work is taking place, access to the hotel is via the Thyme restaurant on Euston Road. Access to Somerton House is unaffected by the work.

5 February 2020

We have followed up with our supply chain partners and implemented further measures to ensure that deliveries to the hotel are made within the agreed windows.

The timing of deliveries will be monitored by Whitbread’s supply chain operations manager on a weekly basis to ensure that third party vehicles do not deliver outside of the agreed times.

In addition, we have spoken with our logistics partners to emphasise that noise must be minimised as much as possible when delivering to the hotel. We have also installed signage at the entrance to the service yard to encourage more considerate behaviour from drivers.

4 December 2019

On 4 December, Whitbread and its project team held an information drop-in event with Somerton House residents followed by a meeting and Q&A session chaired by Councillor Jonathan Simpson to discuss the extension proposals. Camden Council is inviting comments on the planning application until 8 December.

8 November 2019

Whitbread submitted a planning application to the London Borough of Camden on Tuesday 8 October 2019 and the application was validated by the Council on 8 November. The full planning application can be viewed on the Council’s planning portal here – the reference number is 2019/5214/P.

The Council is inviting comments on the planning application until 29 November.

We’re expecting that the London Borough of Camden will be making a decision on the application in early 2020.

8 October 2019

Whitbread submitted a planning application to the London Borough of Camden on Tuesday 8 October 2019.

The application has to be validated by the Council and added to its planning portal. Once the application has been validated, we will share a web link to the full planning application where you will be able to view the application documents and submit any comments you may have to the Council.

We’re expecting that, following validation of the planning application, the London Borough of Camden will be making a decision on the application within 13 weeks.
